Texture

Here are the notes that we use on Texture in music class:

Texture – the way in which melody and harmony interact.  It may also refer to tone color and orchestration.

Monophony – a single unaccompanied melody line.

Plainsong – Monophonic chant sung usually with even rhythm on Latin texts.  Plainsong is one of the earliest examples of notated music.

Homophony – a melodic line supported by a harmonic accompaniment.

Polyphony – two or more independent melody lines sounding together.

Round – a form in which a melody begins in one part and then is continually and exactly repeated by other parts in an overlapping fashion.

Fugue – a musical form based on imitation, in which the main melody (subject) and related melodies (countersubjects) are varied in different ways.

Exposition – the opening section of the fugue.

Episode – the section of a fugue that contains freely treated material.
