ACTIVITIES:
The following is taken from “The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Opera” by William Berger.
Operas
Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Burgtheater, Vienna, 1787): Based on Beaumarchais’s satirical sequel to The Barber of Seville and set to an exquisite libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte, Figaro is an ingenious combination of comedy, drama, refinement, and spontaneity. Besides the marvelous ensembles, Figaro is known for the baritone’s “Non piu andrai,” the mezzo’s “Voi che sapete,” one soprano’s “Dove Sono,” and another soprano’s “Deh vieni, non, tardar,”
On the separate piece of paper:
What is the difference between a comic opera and serious opera? What would Hansel and Gretel be considered? What would your presentation be considered?
Bonus: Name Beethoven’s only opera.
