ACTIVITIES:

The following is taken from “The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Opera” by William Berger.

 Operas

Tannhauser, Richard Wagner (Royal Opera House, Dresden, 1845):  the tale of a medieval noble troubadour caught between good and evil ideals of Woman gives us some of Wagner’s most easily enjoyable moments.  These include a frenzied ballet, a beautiful prayer for the soprano and baritone “Morningstar Song,” “O du mein holde Abendstern.”  The unforgettable Pilgrim’s Chorus” is both the first and last theme we hear in the work.”

On the separate piece of paper:

Explain why it would have been difficult to be a singer in an opera by Richard Wagner.  What did Wagner add to opera that was unique during his time but became a standard after him?

Bonus:  Name a character from the opera “The Marriage of Figaro.”

Journal Activity:

  1. How do you feel about your group’s opera presentation?  Three complete sentences please.
