Madama Butterfly – an opera written by Giacomo Puccini in Italy in 1904 at “La Scala” in Milan.  The opera takes place in Nagasaki, Japan and it is based on a short story by American writer John L. Long.  Four years before the opera was performed, it was a play in London.

Madama Butterfly (soprano) – Cio-Cio-San

B. F. Pinkerton (tenor) – Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy

Suzuki (mezzo-soprano) – Butterfly’s servant

Sharpless (baritone) – U.S. Consul at Nagasaki

Kate Pinkerton (mezzo-soprano) – American wife of Lt. Pinkerton

                   Trouble – Cio-Cio-San’s child
