I Pagliacci

Pagliacci – an opera written by Ruggiero Leoncavallo in 1892.  The libretto is in Italian and besides involving a clown, this opera is known for being a “play within a play.”  It also involved verisimo or realism.

 

Characters:

Nedda (soprano) – Canio’s wife (Columbine in the play)

Canio (tenor) – head of the theater group (Pagliaccio in the play)

Tonio (baritone) – member of the theater group (Taddeo in the play)

Beppe (tenor) member of the theater group (Harlequin in the play)

Silvio (baritone) – villager who loves Nedda
