Twentieth Century Period

These are the notes concerning the Twentieth Century Period that we use in Eighth Grade Music Class:

Twentieth Century (1900 – 2000)

1.    Music became more atonal (no set key)

2.    Music was more dissonant

3.    Music was more mathematical (12 tone row)

 

Forms:

1.    Long symphonies

2.    Tone Poems

3.    Ballet pieces

 

Composers:

1.    Aaron Copeland:  American composer who wrote many ballet, and American Western music.  Most famous for “Fanfare for the Common Man.”

2.    Igor Stravinsky:  Russian composer who wrote many tone poems and suites.  Most famous for “Firebird Suite.”

3.    Scott Joplin:  American composer who wrote many ragtime pieces (jazz compositions with much syncopation).

 4. Arnold Schoenberg: German composer who along with Anton Webern were responsible for 12-tone row (a very mathematical approach to music composition.)
