Here are the group and individual activities for Day 10.
FEEDBACK:
Remember my two guidelines:
ACTIVITIES:
The following is taken from “The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Opera” by William Berger.
Composers:
“George Bizet (1838-1875): The French composer Bizet was an excellent musician, a child prodigy and popular as a pianist in Paris, and whose operas were coolly received by the public in their day. Les Pecheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers) and La jolie Fille de Perth (The Pretty Maid of Perth) are usually popular with audiences today on the rare occasions when anybody bothers to perform them, but his initial fame rests primarily on the immortal Carmen. The initial lack of success of Carmen at the Opera-Comique in Paris is said to have killed Bizet, who died shortly afterward. Furthermore it led to some tinkering with the original, most notably its original spoken dialogue being replaced with recitative by the New Orleans native Ernest Guiraud. Even with the dreaded issue of multiple editions, however, Carmen remains a mainstay of the repertory, and is, according to many, the perfect opera. Abundant melody, a gift present in Bizet’s earlier works, is matched by a perfect mastery of the orchestra within a framework of magnificent dramatic sweep.”
On the separate piece of paper:
What is the difference between an opera and a musical? Give me an example of each.
Would any of Bizet’s operas originally have been considered not an opera?
Bonus: Name Bizet’s opera.
