Day 9

Day 9

Here are the group and individual activities for Day 9.

FEEDBACK:

Finally, do not forget that the Final Copy of your Opera Crossword Puzzle is due today.

Remember my two guidelines:

  1. Inside voices
  2. Stay within your own group

ACTIVITIES:

The following is taken from “The NPR Curious Listener’s Guide to Opera” by William Berger.

Basics of opera:

“There is more to opera than the purely aural.  Opera, at its best, is experienced live.  This means that there are even more considerations:  productions, dance, acting abilities, and everything else that goes along with live theater.  These days, audiences tend to be much more sophisticated than our predecessors in visual terms, but perhaps a bit less in aural terms.  Our ears are assaulted with much noise in the course of a day.”

“We are gifted with much technology that can help us to experience opera as primarily music.  All we need is a little ability to sit still for a bit, concentrate, and try to decipher the patterns and conventions of the composers of opera.”

“In an ideal experience of opera, the listener or viewer is blissfully unaware of the many components creating the moment.  Like great cuisine, the greatest moments are when one forgets or ignores all the technicalities and revels in the experience itself.  The reward of opera is a unique, profound, and intensely satisfying experience of the human condition.”

On the separate piece of paper:

What prevents a person from having an ideal experience with opera?

Bonus:  Name Beethoven’s only opera.
