Overview

The Seventh Grade music class reviews and builds upon what the student has learned in Sixth Grade.  I must note however that the format of the class will be much different for the Seventh Grade students.  In Seventh Grade the students will meet every day for 45 days instead of once or twice a cycle.  This class is more intensive because they only meet for 45 days.

It is hoped that the student will be able to enjoy his/her music class while also discovering interesting information about the different aspects of music.  Topics that will be included in Seventh Grade are as follows:  Rhythm, including tempos, note and rest values; Melody, including contour and the notes and parts of the staff; Form, or the structure of a composition; Music Periods, including the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque. Our largest unit will be on Harmony and the culmination of that unit will be the Harmony Project.

Students will be writing in their journals about different music activities.  There will be two major Unit tests: one on Rhythm and the other one will be on Melody and Harmony.  My eventual plan is for the students to take an oral final exam instead of a written one, but I am not sure that I will be doing that this year..  Also students will participate in two major projects.  They are the harmony presentation and the composer paper.

In conclusion, the students will have the opportunity to perform weekly in front of their peers if they want to do that and they will also have the opportunity to perform one or two songs on the guitar.
